In terms of excellent coffee brewing, manual labor is more popular than ever – that is if pressing a plunger can be qualified as manual labor. The French press lets the coffee beans develop their fullest aroma so it doesn’t come as a surprise that it is the brewing method of choice for coffee tasters trying to determine quality beans. The simplest route to an excellent cup of coffee: coarsely ground coffee, hot water, wait for 4 minutes and press down the plunger. The Chambord has been a classic almost from the day it came out – still is and always will be. Disappointing quality, especially for the price.
A couple major design flaws seriously compromise the quality. First is the propensity for the unit to leak as you pour, dribbling down the side of the glass and off the bottom. If there is the slightest amount of debris on the inside of the glass, it will compromise the seal and coffee leaks out between the top of plastic lid and the glass container. Debris can be anything from a coffee ground, to simply some foam from the top of the coffee as you poured in your hot water. It seems a larger rubber gasket, or a double gasket would have been a better design. The only way to ensure you don’t drop coffee on your table or guests is to not fill the unit above about 75%. The second problem is the quality of the chrome finish. The inside, bottom of the unit (near where the chrome attaches to the plastic base) started rusting soon after I started using the press. It has left a pretty nasty rust etch on the outside of the glass carafe. for a press well over $100.00, I would have expected…
